Listen to Your Machine
Your outdoor power equipment rarely fails without warning. Usually, it gives you subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) hints that something is wrong. Ignoring these signs can lead to total engine failure, but catching them early can save you hundreds of dollars. Whether you run a John Deere tractor or a Craftsman push mower, the signs are similar.
1. Hard Starting
If you're pulling the recoil cord until your arm hurts, something is wrong. Hard starting is often a sign of fuel delivery issues, a fouled spark plug, or poor compression. If it takes more than 3 pulls to start a well-primed engine, it needs a tune-up.
2. Surging (Hunting)
Does your engine rev up and down rhythmically, like it's "hunting" for the right speed? This is a classic sign of a dirty carburetor or a fuel blockage. The engine is starving for fuel, then overcompensating. This causes inconsistent performance and can damage the governor system.
3. Excessive Vibration
Some vibration is normal, but if your hands are numb after 5 minutes, stop immediately.
- On Mowers: This is often a bent crankshaft (from hitting a rock hidden in the leaves) or an unbalanced blade.
- On Snowblowers: It could indicate a damaged impeller or bearing issues.
4. Blue or Black Smoke
Smoke signals are never good.
Blue/White Smoke: Usually means burning oil. You might have worn piston rings or overfilled the oil reservoir.
Black Smoke: Indicates the engine is running "rich" (too much fuel, not enough air). Check your air filter first; if it's clean, the carburetor needs adjustment.
5. Strange Noises
Clanking, banging, or high-pitched squealing are immediate "shut it down" noises. Squealing often points to a belt or bearing issue. Clanking could be loose internal components. Don't risk it—shut it off and call a pro.
